Several Chinese American writers have mainly focused their attention on the clash between traditionalist mothers – still deeply rooted in China and linked to its way of life – and thoroughly Americanized daughters. In her latest collection of short stories entitled Who’s Irish (1999), Gish Jen widens the cultural horizons of the reader by offering a reflection on the problems of the African Americans, the Jewish Americans, the Irish Americans (and virtually every other “hyphenated” group), that she portrays in their interaction with the Chinese Americans.
